AET Transport and Mobility Forum

The AET Transport and Mobility Forum promotes active engagement of AET members and member-groups with each other and with other like-minded transport organisations through supporting and hosting a range of activities including online webinars, seminars and discussions on a wide range of transport and transport related topics of interest. We welcome new members and new ideas about transport and how we talk about transport.

Deriving Insights from the Data Crunch: How AI and ML is Helping us Make Better Use of Large Datasets

FREE Webinar: Thursday, 2 May 2024
11.00 - 12.00 CEST / 10.00 - 11.00 BST

AI is the current zeitgeist in transport planning and many other industries, but several of the techniques that utilise AI or ML (machine learning) are well developed and used in many applications already. This talk will share how AI is being combined with access to large datasets and the automation of standardised processes to derive insights in transport planning or speed up modelling processes that used to require manual effort. This will include how AI is being used to better estimate land use to a fine granular level, how ML is being used to predict short-term traffic patterns, and how large language models can help open up complex tools to improve useability. We will also reflect on both the positives and negatives that AI advances can bring to transport planning, and discuss how AI might influence our work in the coming years.

Udo Heidl 11 2018 01 1

Udo Heidl, Principal Product Manager, PTV Group

Udo Heidl is an expert in transport demand modelling. He has many years of experience (more than 30 years) in creating transport models for cities and regions in Europe and the Middle East. He was also involved in the development of the nationwide traffic model Validate for Germany, which is used for many traffic studies within and outside PTV Group. Due to his expertise in creating macroscopic traffic models, he is actively involved in the development of the market-leading traffic planning software PTV Vision.

Mr. Heidl is well connected in the German academic community regarding transport demand modelling, has contributed significantly to the German Road and Transportation Research Association recommendations on the use of transport demand models for passenger transport (EVNM-PV), and gives lectures and publishes articles on his modeling work. In 2022, Mr. Heidl moved to the PTV Competence Center for Mobility, where, among other things, he is responsible for the new product lines PTV Model2Go and PTV Access as product manager.
