Call for Papers

Providing mobility and access for current and future generations

The climate emergency, increasing attention for equity issues and a changing economic reality continue to present challenges for transport planners. The increasingly critical public and political debate calls for a need to keep the focus on the solutions offered by professionals for current and future generations.

It is the transport planner’s task to provide transport solutions for people and goods to get to where they need to be, in a sustainable, inclusive, efficient, and affordable manner. Keeping public and political support is essential for this focus.

We need a diverse array of expertise from research policy and practice to achieve our mission. Let’s come together at the 52nd European Transport Conference in 2024. Together we explore new developments, new discussions, the challenges they pose, and the potential policy and infrastructure interventions.

From abstract to conference presentation

Abstract Submission

We invite you to submit an abstract based on one of the Conference Themes in this Call for Papers, or the individual calls from the Programme Committees that will follow in January 2024. Abstracts can be submitted via our website. Log in with (or create) your website account and submit one or multiple abstracts from the "My abstracts" section of your account. Any changes to your abstract can also be made via the "My abstracts" section.

Abstracts are created in the abstract form on the website. Samples of what submitted abstract pages will look like can be found in the downloads at the bottom of this page.

Conditions for abstract submission

We invite both AET members and non-members to submit abstracts and to speak at the conference. Please note that we receive more abstracts than we can accommodate in the final programme so selection is not guaranteed. By submitting an abstract you commit yourself to being able to present your submitted abstract on one of the three conference days. Please be aware that presenters must also register for the conference as paying delegates. The provisional programme with accepted authors will be published on 10 May, after acceptance notifications have been sent to abstract submitters. At that time presenters will know the day and time slot their abstract has been awarded on one of the three conference days. We understand that the abstract submitter might not be the colleague who will present the paper at the conference. The presenting author can be identified on the abstract submission form, during submission or at a later stage.

Writing papers and presentations

A style sheet for your conference paper can be found in the downloads at the bottom of this page, as well as more information on writing a conference paper and our guidelines for presenting at our conference. For questions about the abstract submission or programme process, please contact our teams at aetransport.events@aetransport.org.

Paper repository

The repository of ETC past papers is a valuable resource of the Association and is an important source of information for transport planners, researchers and engineers worldwide. Speakers are strongly encouraged to write and submit a full paper to be added to the repository. Full papers can be uploaded on your abstract page after receiving your acceptance notification for the programme in May.

Uploading presentation slides

We ask speakers who are unable to upload their paper before the conference (or who would like to upload both a paper and a presentation) to upload their presentation slided to their abstract page before 9 September. This will help our delegates choose their personal conference programme and help their audience to prepare informed questions for lively debates during the sessions.

Peer review

Presenters interested in peer review and publication online, or in special issues of journals, can indicate so on their abstract submission form. While full papers can be uploaded to your abstract page before the conference, any updated or changed versions of the final papers must be uploaded to the abstract pages by 11 November. Our Peer Review committee will then collect the submitted papers and start their selection process. More information can be found on our publications opportunities page
