The Oosterweel project is a major infrastructure initiative aimed at completing the Antwerp Ring Road (R1). It includes the construction of a set of new tunnels both under the River Scheldt and the port of Antwerp, redesigned interchanges, and improved connections for all means of transport. Large parts of the existing Ring Road will be reconstructed underground and covered, forming new public spaces to be developed, connecting neighboorhoods and improving air quality in residential areas. The works are designed to enhance mobility, safety, and sustainability in and around the city of Antwerp. Managed by Lantis, the project is one of the largest mobility investments in Europe and is expected to be completed in phases through the early 2030s.
Lantis is offering the participants of the ETC a bus tour to get a view of the construction site and the progress made since construction started in 2018.
The tour starts at Antwerp Berchem station, with a visit of one Belgium’s biggest rail signpost hubs. After a technical explanation of how rail signposting works and the tools used, the group moves to Antwerp Central station, for an explanation of the history and functionality of the historical station and its current-day use.
With more than 300 liner services and 800 destinations, Port of Antwerp-Bruges is the second largest port in Europe and a true world port; an important lifeline for the Belgian economy, and more widely into its European hinterland. It is served by an extensive network or rail freight, motorway and inland waterway links; successful ports are about more than maritime transport. During this visit you will see some of the key facilities of the port and enjoy a presentation by the team at the Port Authority, and also enjoy a visit to the Havenhuis with its award-winning architecture.
Meet at the ETC Registration Desk in Building R from 8.15 to leave at 8.30, or join at the Port House at 9.15
