The application and understanding of the principles of Transport Economics, Finance and Appraisal are key to sustainability. Transport Economics is a wide field which at its heart is concerned with human behaviour and the effective allocation of scare resources. This requires an understanding of the factors that drive the demand and supply of all modes of transport for people (and how this varies by peoples’ characteristics, circumstances and location) and goods; the linkages between transport, economics and land use; the pricing of benefits such as time savings and externalities such as greenhouse gas emissions; and the role of economic incentives to change behaviour. Given that much of the supply of transport infrastructure is in the hands of governments or private monopolies, how the sector is regulated is also important. This Committee's remit covers all these issues and how they relate to the appraisal of publicly funded transport provision, the regulation of transport provision and the financing of transport infrastructure, in general.
Our use of transport continues to evolve as governments encourage changes in travel behaviours to meet net zero goals, leading to some pushback against measures affecting personal mobility. At the same time, the need for improved resilience, aging infrastructure and financial constraints also have major implications for how we raise the requisite finance and evaluate investments and policies to ensure equity and maintain mobility for everyone.
The European Transport Conference will once again be at the forefront of discussing how to address these challenges and opportunities. To achieve that we need your unique insights and expertise, at whatever stage of your career you are at, and we especially welcome abstracts that:
Your contributions are vital to shaping the future of transport. We look forward to your abstracts and the diverse perspectives they will bring!
Important notice:
Each year we receive more abstracts than can be accommodated in the programme. If your abstract is selected, please be aware that others have been rejected, that the ETC organisation has invested time in devising an attractive and coherent programme and that delegates use this programme to decide to come to the conference.
Before submitting your abstract, please make sure at least one of the authors can attend the conference to present the paper or poster, that finances are available for conference fee, travel and accommodation costs and that you have/will obtain the approval needed (from management or client) to present the work in public at the time of the conference. If your paper is accepted, you will be required to book and pay for the conference by the end of June.
We do understand that sometimes circumstances can force authors to withdraw. If so, you would help us by informing us as soon as possible. Last minute withdrawals or no-shows negatively affect the conference experience of your fellow transport professionals.
