European Transport Conference, 7-9 September 2022

The Association of European Transport is delighted to publish the call for papers for ETC 2022.

ETC 2022: We hope for a return to a live format in the Politecnico di Milano

The Conference has been held virtually in 2020 and 2021.  In spite of the challenges of holding a multi-stream conference online, it has been possible to offer a high-quality event, attended by more than 500 people each year and delivering in excess of 150 sessions over the two years.   It is acknowledged that the real value of ETC is in the networking opportunities and the ability to make new connections and reaffirm old professional friendships. There is no substitute for those impromptu encounters during coffee breaks when discussion among delegates generates new ideas and contacts.
Our current plan is to hold a full three-day conference at the Bovisa Campus of Politecnico di Milano. However, AET reserves the right to change the format or cancel the conference if required in response to the emerging pandemic situation.

Abstract submission will close Monday 7 February 2022

After closing of the abstract submission on the 7th of February 2022, the paper selection for the 2022 conference will commence. Authors will receive notification of acceptance in early May.

Authors of accepted contributions to the conference are required to register for the conference and present their contribution.

The general call for papers can be found for download at the bottom of this page.  Specific calls for papers of the Programme Committees will also be added when they become available.

The Association is keen that the papers presented at the Conference address themes of relevance to the transport policy agenda in Europe and worldwide – from a research, policy or practice angle.

Papers that fit within Programme Committees’ areas of interest are very welcome.  The Programme Committees in place for the 2022 conference, and their mission statements, can be found on the Programme committee web page.

The 2022 conference will be a special occasion - it will be the 50th to be held. ETC will take as its main theme:

“Behaviour Change – the impacts of the climate emergency and COVID-19 on long term travel patterns”.

There will be some reflection on the development of transport planning since the early 1970s but the main focus will be on the future and how the profession can respond to the challenges of climate change and of life post-Covid.

Each of the 10 Programme Committees produce their own requests for papers and these can be viewed as downloads below.  Some highlights are:

  • Behaviour Change – the impacts of the climate emergency and COVID-19 on long term travel patterns
  • Covid recovery – funding and financial sustainability of public transport
  • The future of cities – emerging new travel and land use patterns
  • The future of aviation – compatibility of recovery and sustainability
  • Travel data – When will new travel patterns be stable enough to inform modelling and forecasting?

Project meetings and disseminatation of research

We welcome papers on research, operational deployment, policy discussion, thought leadership and we want to hear from anyone interested to use ETC 2022 as a platform to hold your final project dissemination event in a parallel collocated stream. If you are interested in disseminating project results you can find more information here.
