Mission Statement:

Public transport systems worldwide are undergoing profound transformation, driven by technological innovation, societal expectations, along with pressing efficiency requirements and sustainability imperatives. At present, public transport stands at the intersection of the green transition, aimed at achieving climate neutrality, and the digital transition, which is reshaping future economies, societies, and smart mobility systems. The green transition demands the decarbonization of fleets, infrastructures, and operations, with electrification, and renewable energy integration becoming central strategies. In parallel, the digital transition is unlocking new opportunities for improving efficiency, inclusiveness, resilience against disruptive events, and interoperability through AI, big data analytics, and Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platforms. In this context, public transport can play a major role as a catalyst for sustainable development, social equity, and improved quality of life across communities, cities, and regions. Yet, one of the greatest challenges ahead is ensuring that smart and green public transport systems are not only efficient but also fair and inclusive.

ETC 2026 - LPT Call for Papers

We invite you to submit abstracts that align with the ETC 2026 conference themes, as well as other topics that contribute to advancing fair and inclusive public transport for more sustainable, smart, and resilient mobility.

For 2026 we have identified the following main topics of interest that we are especially interested in for exchange of knowledge and discussion:

Quality, Equity, and Inclusiveness in Public Transport
  • Benchmarking service quality, enhancing accessibility, resilience, safety and security, user’s satisfaction, and experience
  • Inclusive services and user-centric solutions that meet the needs of people in vulnerable situations across urban or rural contexts
  • Governance, regulations and financing models, e.g. for equitable digital adoption and universal access to services

Green Transition in Public Transport
  • Fleet decarbonization: bus and rail fleets electrification, hydrogen, and alternative fuels
  • Integration of renewable energy and circular economy principles
  • Environmental performance, climate resilience and adaptation strategies

Digital Transition & AI-Driven Management Innovation in Public Transport
  • AI and advanced data analytics for fleet optimization, scheduling, predictive maintenance and operation of public transport systems
  • Automation, smart hubs, digital twins and smart ticketing systems
  • Integration and interoperability, including open data platforms for seamless integration between public transport, shared mobility, and active modes

Researchers, practitioners, and policymakers are encouraged to submit abstracts that envisage theoretical insights, empirical evidence, or practical applications, including case studies. Contributions may highlight innovative solutions, critical socio-technical challenges, and pathways toward sustainable, inclusive, resilient and digitally enabled public transport systems.

Important notice:
Each year we receive more abstracts than can be accommodated in the programme. If your abstract is selected, please be aware that others have been rejected, that the ETC organisation has invested time in devising an attractive and coherent programme and that delegates use this programme to decide to come to the conference.

Before submitting your abstract, please make sure at least one of the authors can attend the conference to present the paper or poster, that finances are available for conference fee, travel and accommodation costs and that you have/will obtain the approval needed (from management or client) to present the work in public at the time of the conference. If your paper is accepted, you will be required to book and pay for the conference by the end of June.

We do understand that sometimes circumstances can force authors to withdraw. If so, you would help us by informing us as soon as possible. Last minute withdrawals or no-shows negatively affect the conference experience of your fellow transport professionals.
