The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) welcomes the Transport and Mobility Forum (TMF) as part of AET’s mid-year events

Anticipating another successful conference in September in Antwerp, AET moved to Porto for its second-most important yearly event: the TMF hybrid seminar. Although TMF webinars are promoted every month, once a year the events exchange the exclusively online format for a physical venue to connect with local stakeholders from a selected European country or region.

And if the objective is to reach out to a wider audience through the common interest on a specific transport-related topic, the Porto event was quite successful, attracting the highest audience to date for a TMF seminar. Approximately 170 participants attended the event, whether in person or online.

Under the topic “Integrating transport step by step: From ticketing to interoperable mobility”, the discussion was centred around the integration of mobility services to create a seamless transportation experience. A consistent programme was delivered to address different aspect of integration, such as the digital infrastructure, ticketing, and emerging business models and mobility services.

The first panellist, Rui Velasco, from the Institute for Mobility and Transport, Portugal, kicked-off the discussion by bringing the nationwide initiative 1bilhete.pt into focus. This project promotes standardisation and interoperability between various ticketing systems, ensuring that the different entities in the sector adopt a common communication and integration model.

Then, Marta Campos Ferreira, from the University of Porto, presented the Anda App, an innovative mobile ticketing solution developed for the Porto Metropolitan Area that optimises the fare for all users (occasional or monthly tickets), allowing to travel without knowing the fare rules.

Moving on to emerging forms of mobility, Fulvio Silvestri, from the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, debated how integrated fare structures can promote seamless travel across multiple modes of transport, focusing on the MaaS bundles that are being developed for the Milan Metropolitan Area.

Finally, Charles Nichols, from Solent Transport, presented UK’s first and largest multi-city MaaS platform as part of the Solent Future Transport Zone. A “learn by doing” approach has been undertaken to test the concept of MaaS and understand the true impact on how it might support the movement of people and influence their transport decision making process.

The TMF hybrid seminar in Porto was then an opportunity to get a comprehensive overview of the different steps and challenges of transport integration, consolidating AET’s leading role in the multidisciplinary debate of transport problems.
