In April 2025, the AET Transport and Mobility Forum were delighted to host a Webinar on the topic of ‘Inclusive Mobility; Equal Access for All.’ This is a very topical subject, so it was no surprise that it proved a very well-attended and thought-provoking discussion, expertly moderated by Daniëlle Snellen from the Diversion & Inclusion Working Group.
After the speakers were introduced, we kicked off with an engaging presentation by Adrienne Matthews and Kelly Cary from AtkinsRéalis on ‘Getting Home Safely: Why considering the safety of women and girls is crucial for inclusive transport and spaces,’ in which the presenters shared the findings from their 2024 survey that sought to build a deeper understanding of what features impact our perception of safety whilst travelling and using public spaces.
They explored differences between demographic groups and set out why this evidence is crucial, citing industry lack of evidence available on best interventions to ensure inclusive transport and public space. They concluded that to support and deliver successful travel schemes that consider the safety of women and girls, it’s all about the customer experience – creating services and spaces that are welcoming and fit for purpose.
Kelly and Adrienne were seamlessly followed by an equally excellent presentation on ‘ELABORATOR – Designing sustainable urban mobility towards climate-neutral cities’ by Andréia Lopes Azevedo from Polis. Andréia set out how the EU-funded ELABORATOR project aims to support cities in planning and designing mobility and public space that reflect the views and needs of their users while pursuing their climate-neutrality path.
Andréia’s presentation placed emphasis on implementing sustainable mobility measures in a more inclusive and accessible manner and reflected on some of the projects’ current outcomes including the Co-creation Playbook leading to the presentation showcasing three of the Lighthouse cities Copenhagen, Milan and Zaragoza that are piloting key interventions to ensure that mobility and public space are available to everyone.
Following an extended Q&A session, it was clear that a stimulating session had emerged for those in attendance, with debate and exchange of ideas, knowledge and links to related research by participants that will add significant value to projects across the industry. The recording will be made available online, free to access for AET members so if you were unable to attend, be sure to check it out!
