One of the highlights of ETC 2023 were the technical visits to DriSMi, the state-of-the-art driving simulator of Politecnico of Milano.
DriSMi is a technological prowess in its own right: the driving cockpit is mounted on a hexalift, itself mounted on top of a cable-driven platform that moves on the floor. This architecture allows for redundant degrees of freedom for a proper separation between low- and high-frequency movements, ultimately leading to a more immersive driving experience.
But let’s not forget about the main purpose of driving simulators: analyse and enhance road safety without the risks of real-world testing. So, besides a highly realistic simulation setting, DriSMi allows for a comprehensive parametrization to simulate and test vehicle components, as well as for a complete monitoring of drivers’ inputs and biometrics. In this way, it is possible for researchers to get a full picture of the complex driver-vehicle-road interactions, highlighting the importance of human factors in road safety research.
Three visits to DriSMi were organised during the conference, where the delegates saw DriSMi in action, lapping the famous Monza Circuit. There was also time for checking out the control room and the biometric monitoring equipment, which has stimulated a handful of questions and revealed the interest and enthusiasm of the participants.
