The European Transport Conference 2024 was for the first time held in Antwerp, Belgium. About 550 conference participants made it to sunny Antwerp by using various transport modes towards this crossroads city of European transport arteries.
The main topic of the conference was mobility and access for the current and future generations. More than ever, it’s clear that transport is essential but no longer evident, and neither is the way it is implemented.
A wide series of parallel sessions dealt with topics in aviation, data, freight & logistics, global trends impacting transport, intelligent mobility, local public transport, planning for sustainable land use and transport, rail policy and planning, transport economics, finance and appraisal, and transport models. Main and emerging topics that featured throughout the conference were decarbonisation and sustainability, analysis of data, synchromodality, e-commerce and new delivery methods, transport regulation, inclusion and micromobility.
Various technical excursions were set up, among others a walking tour in Antwerp with a focus on mobility, an urban logistics cycling tour in Antwerp, a technical visit of the Antwerp-Berchem and Centraal railway stations, and the Oosterweel ringway closure works.
All participants were also invited to a civic reception hosted by City of Antwerp at Het Steen, Antwerp’s historical castle. The conference dinner at Horta (pictured below) allowed for plenty of exchanges and enjoying Belgian food in an iconic architectural setting.
