A dedicated Special Session highlights innovation, cooperation, and sustainable mobility across the ADRION region

The MISSION Project was proud to take part in the European Transport Conference (ETC) 2025, held from 17 to 19 September at the University of Antwerp. As part of this year’s programme, MISSION hosted a dedicated Special Session titled “Mid-Term High-Level Dissemination Event” on 18 September, bringing together project partners, policymakers, researchers, and mobility innovators from across Europe. The session provided a valuable opportunity to present achievements at the midpoint of the project and to strengthen synergies with ongoing European initiatives in sustainable urban mobility.

The European Transport Conference, organised annually by the Association for European Transport, remains a unique arena for discussing policy, research, and best practices. ETC 2025 continued this tradition, offering a comprehensive programme centred on multimodality, climate-neutral mobility, and data-driven planning. Within this broader context, the MISSION session provided a robust transnational perspective, reflecting the project’s aim of promoting Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) solutions across the Adriatic-Ionian region.

The session opened with remarks from Lucia Calliari (Interreg IPA ADRION Joint Secretariat), who emphasised the programme’s commitment to sustainable, multimodal, and cross-border mobility. Her intervention set the tone for the morning, highlighting the systemic value of collaboration in achieving long-term climate objectives.

Prof. Coppola (Politecnico di Milano) followed with an overview of the MISSION’s goals and methodology, underscoring the importance of transnational cooperation in adapting MaaS models to regional characteristics. Subsequent presentations showcased key innovations, including the MISSION Smart App introduced by Ahmad Shanan (Pluservice) and data-driven modelling approaches presented by Panagiota Saranti (University of Patras).

The session also explored connections with other initiatives. Eleni Karakitsou (University of West Attica) shared insights from the GREENMO project, while Dr. Vassilis Agouridas (ERTICO – ITS Europe) discussed the integration of aerial mobility services within the IDI Platform, an area that is rapidly gaining prominence in multimodal planning.

A rich sequence of local case studies offered concrete examples of MISSION’s impact. Speakers from Sarajevo, Maribor, and Novi Sad presented advances ranging from enhanced real-time trip planners to new tools for identifying high-risk pedestrian and cycling areas, all contributing to inclusive and user-centric mobility strategies.

An engaging Q&A session brought the event to a close, addressing challenges of implementation, scalability, and public-private cooperation, and highlighting a high level of interest that confirmed the relevance of MISSION’s work in shaping sustainable mobility across the ADRION region.

The Special Session at ETC 2025 reaffirmed MISSION’s position as a catalyst for innovation, knowledge exchange, and regional integration, supporting cities and stakeholders on their path toward smart, green, and connected mobility systems.
