As the Association of European Transport (AET) enters 2026, we reflect on 2025 as a year of dynamic activity and successful engagement for our members. The 53rd European Transport Conference (ETC) concluded its two-year run in Antwerp, with members praising the quality of sessions, networking opportunities and the vibrant atmosphere fostered by the University of Antwerp. The ETC remains a cornerstone event for the transport community, complemented by a robust calendar of activities throughout the year.

Looking ahead, the 54th ETC will be hosted in Porto, Portugal, in September 2026, marking a new chapter for the conference. The University of Porto and its Faculty of Civil Engineering will provide a spectacular venue on the banks of the Douro River, with excellent transport connections and a rich cultural setting. The Call for Papers closes on 6th February, and Programme Committees are actively reviewing abstracts to ensure another innovative and engaging conference.

Beyond ETC, AET’s Transport and Mobility Forum (TMF) has continued to thrive, hosting monthly webinars on diverse topics and organising a successful live/hybrid event in Porto in March 2025. TMF’s collaborations, such as with the Journal of Urban Mobility, have led to special sessions and publications, further enriching the Association’s content and reach. A new Hackathon initiative launched in Padova, Italy, engaged teams in designing sustainable tourism transport solutions, with winners invited to attend ETC 2025.

AET’s commitment to fostering participation is evident in the opportunities for members to join Programme Committees, attend webinars, participate in the Young Researchers and Professionals Forum (YRPF), and present papers at ETC. The Association also recognises excellence through annual prizes sponsored by leading organisations; celebrating achievements in data, land use, urban mobility and young researchers.

Leadership transitions have marked the past year, with Hermann Maier stepping down as Chair of the AET Board after distinguished service, honoured with the AET Excellency Award. The ongoing dedication of the Board, Council, Programme Committees and volunteers is vital for AET’s continued success.

As we prepare for ETC in Porto and a year of new opportunities, AET encourages all members, especially newcomers, to get involved, contribute and help shape the future of European transport. For further information or to participate, members are invited to contact AET Ambassadors or Sanderijn Baanders. A Happy New Year to all, with best wishes for a successful 2026.
